Is Aldi legit?

Legit, mixed reviews

Aldi is the genuine article, the German discount supermarket whose mostly own-label range keeps prices low, yet those savings come with a no-frills visit. Its stores run on fewer staff than most supermarkets, so a long queue, a gap on the shelf or a quick answer at the till can be harder to find.

What we checked

  • Family-owned, founded in Essen
  • Split into Aldi Nord and Süd
  • Ratings on other review websites: 1.5/5

Watch out for

  • A weekly special buy that has already sold out by the time you reach the store.
  • Fresh food that turns out spoiled or mouldy well before the date on its label.
  • A social media post offering free Aldi vouchers in return for filling in a survey.

Bought something at Aldi that was already spoiled?

We help you write it, it gets its own public page, and you can have it sent to Aldi as a formal letter.

How do I contact Aldi customer service?

Aldi runs country by country, so use the Aldi website for the country you shopped in: the contact section there reaches the customer service team that can actually see your store and your order, and aldi.com is the site for the US. In store, the quickest route is the manager rather than the checkout: bring the receipt, the product and a photo if something is wrong with it.

For a grocery delivery, contact the service that delivered it as well as Aldi, because the delivery partner handles most order problems and holds the refund. Refused a refund because the receipt has gone missing? Put the store, the date and what happened in your complaint here: we help you write an effective complaint fast, drawing on complaint letters that actually worked.

What is Aldi's return policy?

Aldi sets its return terms per country, and the version that applies to you is the one published on your national Aldi website, so check that before you travel back to a store. In general terms the route is the same everywhere: take the item and the receipt to the store, ask for the manager if the checkout cannot handle it, and say clearly whether the product was faulty, spoiled or simply not wanted.

Food that is past its date, spoiled or contaminated is usually dealt with on the spot, and Aldi asks for the packaging because the batch code on it is how a bad product is traced. Photograph the item, the label and the receipt before you hand any of it over: once it goes back over the counter, your evidence goes with it.

What can I do about a faulty Aldi product?

Almost everything Aldi sells is own brand, which means Aldi is both the shop and the brand behind the product: there is no manufacturer to send you to, and the store is the place to start. Take the item, the packaging and the receipt, and describe the fault rather than your disappointment.

The weekly special buy ranges work differently: those non-food items (Aldi Finds in the US, Specialbuys in the UK) usually come with a warranty and a service line printed in the manual or on the box, run by the supplier rather than by the store. That line handles repairs and replacements once the return window has closed. If neither the store nor the supplier puts it right, a complaint through our complaint process gets your case in front of Aldi: we chase it through emails, social media and letters.

How do I complain to Aldi head office?

Head office for you is the national one, not Germany: each Aldi country business runs its own stores, its own customer service and its own regional managers. Send the complaint through the customer service contact on your national Aldi site and ask for it to be escalated to the area or regional manager responsible for that store.

Include the store address, the date and time, the receipt or order number, exactly what happened and what you want done. Where it involves food safety or hygiene, the outside route is your local food safety or environmental health authority, and Aldi is well aware of that. Head office closed your case without fixing it? Put it on our website: other shoppers with the same problem can back you up.

Is that free Aldi voucher on Facebook real?

Almost certainly not. Posts promising Aldi vouchers worth £85 or more have spread on social media, usually leading to a survey that collects your personal details and asks you to share the post with friends. Aldi has confirmed that such offers did not exist.

What do people complain about most at Aldi?

So far consumers reported 78 complaints about Aldi here, with an average rating of 1.4 out of 5. The most common themes: staff who were rude, abrupt or unprofessional, customers left feeling humiliated at the checkout, accusations of racial profiling, food that turned out to be spoiled or past its date, and shelves that are empty when it matters.

What happens after I submit my complaint?

Your complaint gets its own public page on Complain.biz and we get to work: we bring it to the attention of Aldi through emails, social media, paper complaint letters and other tools at our disposal.

And we stay with it after you file. Our trained AI opens a case file for you and keeps coaching: what to reply, when to push again, and how to escalate if nothing happens.

Can other consumers help me with my Aldi complaint?

Yes. We have an active community of consumers, and complaints here are public: people who ran into the same problem at Aldi can give you advice or back you up with their own story. A complaint with a community behind it is much harder to overlook.
