My complaint:

On Saturday, I had to pick up a few things. The self-checkout was too busy, so I decided to use a cashier. While waiting, there was an older gentleman in front of me. During this whole time, the customer was trying to bag his purchase and pay. He was clearly flustered and was rushing because there was a line. I told him to take his time, I was in no rush. He asked the cashier to enter his SS card number and he replied, we are not allowed to do that. Really? Since when I thought to myself? The customer also did not know that when you put your card in to pay, there are s to follow. The cashier did speak to him and did not help him at all. Then it was my turn.

No hello. Not greeted and I was not asked to enter my SS card number. This young boy did not he even look at me. As I was taking my groceries, someone else came onto his line and all of a sudden, the cashier was alive, and excited, very talkative and addressed this guy as yo, my homie, what’s up? I was disgusted. Perhaps because I am not a woman of color, he had very little interest in helping me or the gentleman before me.

I know Covid has changed a lot of things, but one thing it should never have changed is common decency. Where is the courtesy of helping a customer who has bags and can clearly use the help instead standing there waiting for the customer to finish? Just so rude! Just because SS does not offer bags anymore, does that mean the cashiers should stop doing their job by assisting the customer, especially someone who is older? I should have stayed around long enough to see if the cashier helped his homie bag but was afraid of what I would say if he had. I was disappointed and disgusted by this boy’s behavior and I thought SS valued their customers. I guess I was wrong and will probably not shop there again.

Suggested solution:

You cannot teach someone decency and respect. If they did not learn it at home, it's not something you can teach them. Sad, but true.
