CUSTOMER SERVICE – COMMENTS
• approximately 4:30 pm, Saturday, May 28, 2002, shopped with my partner at Carlingwood – eventually went to Loblaws
• my partner accidentally spilled a few drops from his coffee on the floor (I said my partner was recovering from a stroke)
• a man came up and spoke angrily toward him, and began scolding him
• he said he’d seen my partner spitting on the floor – which was not true but the drops of coffee (which were few) spilled as he is recovering from a stroke, causing him to be unsteady on his feet at times
• he yelled at me too, and I responded assertively and then turned to ask the cashier who he was and and began to complain to her, who said she would clean up as soon as she put our order through
• I iterated that it was not her responsibility and that it was only a few drops, and noticed this manager was standing behind our cart at the cash to listen, and responded fiercely
• I warned that I was a customer and will not be subject to his antics, iterating that I have been a customer of the Loblaws at Carlingwood for 50 years (before the Carlingwood mall was enclosed) and had never been subject to that type of reaction from previous managers
• he thumped his finger on the conveyor belt denying what I said and I responded telling him it would all be caught on camera
• she said she told him my partner had a stroke, and that he said he didn’t know (even though I had told him when he started bullying my partner
• then, a person with a bucket and mop who cleans up severe spills at the grocery store appeared, for the couple of drops my partner was responsible for
• I complained to another Loblaws employee who advised me that in the four years he has been a manager, he has been much more rude to other customers without consequence, and that complaining would be a waste of time

Suggested solution:

• this individual needs to have customer service training, needs to be monitored, and must be made aware of consequences he will face if his bullying attitude toward customers continues
• I worked for the government before I retired, and people who worked with the public underwent service excellence training, and I am sure he would benefit, in the event that Loblaws Employees are unionized and employees cannot be terminated
