Bank of the West was sold by BNP Paribas to BMO, and the takeover completed in 2023. Customer accounts, branches and online banking were converted onto BMO systems that year and the Bank of the West brand was withdrawn, which is why searches for it now land on the successor bank.

For a customer, the practical consequence is that the contract carried on but the counterparty changed. Any complaint about something that happened under the old name is now handled by the bank that took the business on, so keep the conversion letters you were sent: they are the evidence of what moved, and when.

Assume nothing keeps working forever after a bank conversion. Account numbers, routing numbers, debit cards and check stock are often reissued, and the old versions are usually honored only for a transition period set by the successor bank, so the numbers printed on a Bank of the West check may no longer route a payment.

Make the request in writing, name the account holder, the old account number, the branch and the exact period you need, and ask what the copies cost and how long they take.

Download anything you can still reach in online banking now rather than later, because access to legacy statements is often withdrawn once a conversion is complete. Statements matter for tax records, for a loan application and for any dispute about a charge, so keep them somewhere outside the banking app itself.
