Is Bitcoin legit?

Legit

Bitcoin is genuine, the original cryptocurrency, but it is a network rather than a company, so nobody can step in when money goes the wrong way. Once a payment confirms, only the person who received it can send it back, which is why scammers steer people to Bitcoin ATMs and online 'trading experts'.

What we checked

  • Network running since January 2009
  • Created by pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto
  • Supply capped at 21 million coins

Watch out for

  • A caller or pop-up urging you to move cash into a Bitcoin ATM to keep your savings safe.
  • A trading platform that wants a withdrawal fee paid in Bitcoin before your profits can be released.
  • Coins sent to a wrong address or network, which no one can pull back once confirmed.

Told to feed cash into a Bitcoin ATM?

We help you write it, it gets its own public page, and you can have it sent to Bitcoin as a formal letter.

How do I contact Bitcoin?

Bitcoin has no customer service: it is a decentralized network with no company behind it, no head office, no support desk and no phone number, and nobody has the power to reverse a payment or restore a lost wallet for you. Anyone presenting themselves as Bitcoin support is a scammer, and the phone numbers, chat accounts and social media profiles offering a Bitcoin helpline exist for exactly that purpose.

The company you actually need is the one you dealt with: the exchange, app, broker, wallet provider or bitcoin ATM operator that took your money or holds your account. Name that company when you complain, because that is who can act and who a regulator can hold responsible. Withdrawal blocked by the exchange? Report it here and others stuck on the same platform can back your case up.

Can a Bitcoin transaction be reversed?

No: once a bitcoin transaction is confirmed on the network it cannot be reversed, cancelled or charged back by anyone, including the exchange you sent it from. That is how the network is built, and it is why fraud that asks for payment in bitcoin is so hard to undo. A transaction that is still unconfirmed can sometimes be replaced or dropped, but only if your wallet supports it and only while it is still waiting.

There is one practical exception. If the coins landed in an account at an exchange or a custodial wallet, that company can freeze the account while the funds are still sitting there, and speed decides whether that works. Contact both platforms within hours with the transaction ID, the date, the amount and the receiving address.

Why is my Bitcoin withdrawal stuck or frozen?

A stuck bitcoin withdrawal is either a network delay or a decision by the platform, and the transaction ID tells you which. If you have a transaction ID, the payment is already on the network and is waiting for confirmation, usually because the fee was set low at a busy moment. If there is no transaction ID, the coins never left the platform and the hold is its own: identity verification, an anti money laundering review, a security lock after a password or device change, or a limit on the account.

Ask the platform in writing for the reason and for exactly what it needs from you, and note the date you asked. One thing worth knowing: a platform that demands an extra payment, a tax or a release fee before it will let you withdraw is showing the standard signature of a fraudulent site, and sending that money never releases the balance. Bring the platform name, dates and amounts into your complaint here and we take it to them.

How do I get my money back after a Bitcoin scam?

Act within hours, because the only realistic chance of recovering bitcoin is freezing it before it moves on, and work three routes at once: tell the platform you sent from and the platform that received the coins so an account can be frozen, report it to the authorities, and tell your bank if the money reached the scammer by card or transfer first. In the US that means the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center and the FTC, in the UK Action Fraud, and in the EU your national police cybercrime unit.

Have the transaction IDs, the wallet addresses, the website or app name and every message with the scammer ready. Then protect yourself from the second hit: recovery services that promise to get your coins back for a fee up front are almost always the same fraud returning under a new name, and no legitimate service asks for money up front to recover crypto. Raise the case through our complaint process and we push it out to the platform involved by email, on social media and in printed letters.

Is that request to pay through a Bitcoin ATM real?

No. Real banks, government agencies and tech support teams do not ask you to put cash into a Bitcoin ATM to protect your money or fix a problem. Once the cash goes in and the QR code you were sent is scanned, the coins land in the scammer's wallet and cannot be pulled back.

What do people complain about most at Bitcoin?

So far consumers reported 8 complaints about Bitcoin here, too few to show a clear pattern yet. Our research shows what typically goes wrong at the exchanges, apps and bitcoin ATMs people use to buy and sell it: withdrawals frozen the moment someone tries to cash out, accounts locked behind verification that never finishes, fees that were never disclosed up front, investment platforms and trading groups that turn out to be fraudulent, machines that take cash and credit nothing, and payments sent to a scammer that no one can reverse.

What happens after I submit my complaint?

Your complaint gets its own public page on Complain.biz and we get to work: we bring it to the attention of Bitcoin through emails, social media, paper complaint letters and other tools at our disposal.

And we stay with it after you file. Our trained AI opens a case file for you and keeps coaching: what to reply, when to push again, and how to escalate if nothing happens.

Can other consumers help me with my Bitcoin complaint?

Yes. We have an active community of consumers, and complaints here are public: people who ran into the same problem with Bitcoin can give you advice or back you up with their own story. A complaint with a community behind it is much harder to overlook.
