My complaint:

Good evening .
I have recently visited the asda selsey store in West Sussex around 7pm 8th August.

Non mask wearing

I walked into the store and was immediately met by and angry young lady employee and security guard who told me I need to put on a mask immediately or they will not allow me into the store or to be served

I explained to them that asda head office themself say that they will not be refusing entry and refusing to serve customers not wearing masks and in fact that I have asthma the response from both of them was that I was selfish and going to spread the disease and cause another lockdown and they actually said I had covid and was spreading it . I requested to speak with the store manager or someone of higher position in the store of whom they said no one was available.
I started to walk around the store getting my shopping and both the security guard and an asda employee followed me around the store telling me I’m diseased and threatening to call the police which I was quite happy for them to do as at this point it had now become harassment and I started to feel extremely threatened, they then told me I was going to be physically removed for not wearing a mask and telling me I don’t have a health condition and that I am a liar.

I kept trying to tell them that I have asthma but do not have a exemption card yet and even got up a press statement and showed it to them from Asda regarding masks but this mate no difference .

In the end I left the store with very little of my shopping .

I have spoken to a gentleman over the phone from the store who was more than helpful and said the staffs behaviour was disgusting.

This needs to be followed up ASAP as threatening to physically remove a customer is unlawful and illegal under these grounds .

This will all be under the stores cctv and I would like an immediate follow up . I am a letter writer and will be going to the local press with this issue.

I look forward to your response

Thanks

Suggested solution:

Inform staff on the correct procedures regarding mask wearing . Asda head office have released press statements saying staff are not supposed to be challenging mask wearers and should instead just advise the individual and allow the customer to make their own decision.
