Food Lion complaint: Paper vs Plastic

My complaint:

I was just in this store at 11:30am 9142021. I shop at this store all the time for many years because it is basically the only grocery store in the neighborhood. I am 66 years old with a bad back and I walk with a walker and use the scooters when I shop at Food Lion. I also live alone in an apartment building so as I went through the line to pay for my groceries I noticed the young man was putting my groceries in brown paper bags and I immediately ask him to please put my groceries in plastic bags because I wouldn’t be able to carry them or get them out of my car. He said that the store was out of plastic bags but there were people in the other lines getting their groceries put in plastic. I said so why you can’t go to the other registers and get a few bags to just put my groceries in so I will be able to get them out of my car. He said I will call the manager to see what we can do and a young lady came abd said the same thing. I kept trying to be patient but she walked away like you will have to take the paper bags and that’s that. All they had to do was get a few plastic bags and put my groceries in them and let me go. By this time other people are hearing what’s going on and offering to transfer the groceries for me but all the employees kept saying was that they were out of plastic bags but other customers are steadily leaving the store with plastic. The young lady said oh I will go with you to your car to help you put them in your car by this time I am very upset cause all I asked was for plastic not paper but they were going to make me take paper. I took a few steps towards the exit and stopped and said I think I might just get my money back and leave the groceries cause I can’t get them out of my car into the house at that time tge young lady said I will get you plastic bags and I said that is all I was asking for from the beginning. All the other customers are hearing what was going on andlooking and saying things. One customer said I would rather have paper and I asked the young man to just switch the groceries but he did not want to do that. I am not sure why they would not just give me plastic, it’s not like I was going to need all the plastic bags they had but then some other customers were getting plastic. Also there was another customer in the same line I was in and she only had 1 bag but she wanted plastic for what ever reason and I told her what I had just went through to get the plastic bags. So the young lady finally switch my groceries from paper to plastic but they could have done that from the beginning and there wouldn’t have been a scene. I just don’t understand why they did not give me the plastic bags as I asked from tge beginning instead of kept saying we are out of plastic bags but the other cashiers were bagging the other customers groceries in plastic. I kept trying to make them understand tgat I was disabled and it would be hard for me with the paper and for that reason alone they should have accommadated me with my request for the plastic bags. I have been going to this store for years and all the regular employees know me and I have never giving anyone any problems. As the young lady was switching my items another manager came up and instead of him saying sorry for the inconvenience he just kept saying you don’t have to be loud and I told him that I tried being nice from the beginning but nothing got done until I got loud. He treated me like I had done something wrong and all I asked was for plastic bags. I think all the so called managers and cashiers at this location need MORE CUSTOMER SERVICE TRAINING. This was a simple fix, just put the disabled customer’s groceries in plastic bags because that is what she requested.

Suggested solution:

I don't know what I think they should do to resolve the complaint but something needs to be done because I was very upset and embarrassed for just wanting my groceries in PLASTIC BAGS. I have been shopping at this store for more years than I can remember since Food Lion has been in that location.
