I went to salvation Army during this Christmas holiday season in need of food, and clothing for my sons ages 9 and 13. I spoke to the lady and she began to ask me my situation and circumstances. She was so hesitant to offer me anything. She eventually reluctantly gave me two 50 dollar vouchers to the thrift store to get some used clothing for my sons. Meanwhile, a friend of mine went in their office and was given large bags of new clothes for all her children, bags of new toys, and food.
I asked my friend if she had asked for these things and she replied, no the lady just gave them to me.
The lady was a Hispanic woman that was working there and so is my friend. I, in the other hand am African American and I could feel the discrimination in the way the lady spoke to me and the fact that she didnt offer me the things she had offered my friend was unfair and discriminatory.
I really dont know how to suggest a resolution to this issue. However, my boys are still in need of toys for Christmas which is in four days. This situation probably wont be resolved, however, I still feel the need to speak out about it.
