My complaint:

My 22 year grandson was recently employed by Ollie’s in Garland. At orientation, the manager was very negative by telling all the new employees that he didn’t expect them to continue working there after they unloaded trucks in the middle of the week( that many would quit on that day). What manager does that? A manager should encourage their employees! The first day of work, my grandson brought to the Manager’s attention that there was broken glass that needed to be cleaned up on an aisle and that the men’s bathroom needed cleaning because someone had wiped poop on the walls. The manager told him not to be concerned about it, though that violates OSHA safety and health protocol. He took it upon himself to clean the bathroom and clean up the broken glass, and nothing was said about it, nor did the manager say anything about it that day. The next day, he reported this incident to corporate headquarters and was told his complaint would be confidential. Then when he returned to work after being off one day, he had to unload merchandise from trucks and did this willingly. When this was done, the manager took him aside and told him he was fired for insubordination because he had cleaned the bathroom and cleaned up the broken glass without the Manager’s permission. He did a good deed and was fired for it! This store is always a mess and unorganized, and they are constantly short staffed, but the manager felt he needed to fire a hard working employee who actually did something worthwhile! As a previous customer at this store, they will no longer receive my patronage, and if I continue seeing health and safety violations at other Ollie’s stores, I will no longer shop there, no matter the bargains! Not worth my peace of mind!

Suggested solution:

Corporate headquarters needs to look into how their stores are being operated and whether or not OSHA standards are being violated, especially at the Garland store!
