A Case of Discrimination

Introduction

Imagine being a senior homeowner, living with a disability, and not having access to heat during the winter or cool air during the summer. It sounds unfair, right? Unfortunately, this is the reality for one black and disabled senior homeowner who was told by Liheap that she needed to fix her roof before getting her heating and air conditioning fixed. This situation raises concerns about racism, discrimination, civil and human rights violations, as well as violations of the disability act. Let’s take a closer look at the individuals involved and why they should be held accountable for their actions.

The Individuals Responsible

Mindy Sanders

Mindy Sanders is one of the individuals involved in this case. She works for the Delta Area Economic Opportunity Corporation of Sikeston, Missouri. As a representative of this organization, she has a responsibility to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their race or disability, are treated fairly and have access to basic necessities like heat and air conditioning. However, her actions in this situation have shown a lack of empathy and understanding.

Joel Evans

Joel Evans is another individual who played a role in denying the senior homeowner access to heat and air conditioning. Like Mindy Sanders, he is also associated with the Delta Area Economic Opportunity Corporation. As someone in a position of power, he should have advocated for the rights of the senior homeowner and taken steps to rectify the situation. Unfortunately, he failed to do so.

The Violations

Racism and Discrimination
By denying the senior homeowner access to heat and air conditioning, Mindy Sanders and Joel Evans have displayed acts of racism and discrimination. They have treated this individual differently solely based on her race and disability, which is completely unacceptable. Everyone deserves equal treatment and access to basic necessities, regardless of their background.

Civil and Human Rights Violations

Denying someone access to heat and air conditioning can be seen as a violation of their civil and human rights. These rights include the right to a safe and comfortable living environment. By neglecting their duty to provide these basic needs, Mindy Sanders and Joel Evans have violated the civil and human rights of the senior homeowner.

Violation of the Disability Act

The Disability Act is in place to protect individuals with disabilities from discrimination and ensure they have equal opportunities. By refusing to fix the senior homeowner’s heating and air conditioning until her roof is fixed, Mindy Sanders and Joel Evans have violated this act. They have failed to accommodate her disability and have denied her equal access to essential services.

What Happened?

So, here’s what happened. Mindy and Joel, the people in charge, were not treating the senior applicant very well. They were being difficult and not giving them the help they needed. This made the authorized party, who was helping the applicant, really upset. They decided to put some pressure on Mindy and Joel to make them change their actions. But even after filing a complaint, it did not get any better.

Subpar Roof Repairs

As if things weren’t bad enough, Mindy and Joel hired someone who wasn’t even registered to do some roof repairs. And guess what? The repairs were not good at all. In fact, they made the property look even worse than before. This issue was brought to the attention of them as well, but they didn’t offer any solution. It’s been a long time since February, and the applicant still doesn’t have proper heating or air conditioning.

The Denial

Recently, auditors came to check everything and even set a date for a full audit. But then, a letter was received saying that they denied the application because of abuse. Can you believe it? They claimed that there was some kind of abuse through email. But here’s the thing, it was actually a personal issue between Mindy and the representative, not the applicant. It seems like just another excuse to avoid doing their job. This is also discrimination because they are making decisions based on personal feelings.

A Frustrating Conclusion

It’s really frustrating to see how the applicant is being treated. Mindy made a decision to deny her accommodations just because of how she feels about the representative. It’s not fair at all. Seniors deserve better treatment and a solution to our problems. Discrimination and neglect should never be tolerated. The case of the black and disabled senior homeowner being denied heat and air conditioning is a clear example of discrimination and a violation of civil, human, and disability rights. Mindy Sanders and Joel Evans, the individuals responsible for this injustice, need to be held accountable for their actions. It is crucial that we advocate for equal treatment and access to basic necessities for all individuals, regardless of their race or disability. Let’s work together to ensure that incidents like these do not happen again.

Suggested solution:

Complete repairs and relieve themselves from their duty.
