My complaint:
I had money in my BBVA checking account, waiting to close on a house. (my first home purchase) I did not receive the totals until late on a Friday, so I called on Monday to try to wire money to my title company.
There is a $5000 limit on electronic wire transfers, so that would not do. I was told I needed to obtain a wire PIN to transfer a large sum of money. So, I naturally requested a wire PIN, only to be told that since they are in the middle of a merger with PNC, that they cannot issue new wire PINs at the moment.
I asked what else I could do, and they suggested that I visit a branch and obtain a cashier’s check. This sounded reasonable, so I asked where the closest branch was.
It is in Alabama.
I live in Maryland.
I reiterated to them that this was ridiculous and I could not fly to Alabama for this, but more than one person told me that faxed signatures and IDs were not acceptable in this scenario.
I informed them again that they were holding my money hostage and I needed it TODAY. They doubled down and said the only way was to visit a branch in Alabama.
So I took half a day off of work, booked a flight, and flew to Alabama to get a cashier’s check so I could close on my mortgage the next day.
This scenario never should have happened and it cost me almost $800 to buy a same-day ticket.
Suggested solution:
They should reimburse my airfare.
