About Barclays
While Barclays is one of the larger retail and business banks in the UK, people dealing with high street banks like this one tend to hit the same issues: disputed card payments and chargeback claims, money lost to scams and how much of it gets reimbursed, accounts frozen or closed during security or compliance checks, online and app logins that fail at the verification step, and mortgage or loan servicing that’s slow to correct a mistake.
Report anything unrecognised on your statement straight away and get the reference number for the case. Put the complaint in writing, keep dates and copies of what you sent, and ask for the bank’s final response. UK banks have a formal complaints procedure, and if you’re not satisfied with the answer you can take the case to the Financial Ombudsman Service free of charge.
Scam payment refused reimbursement, or a card dispute rejected? Open a case with us. We keep advising you on what to send next and when to take it to the ombudsman.
Common customer service questions about Barclays
How do I file a complaint about Barclays?
Do you have a dispute or a bad customer experience with Barclays? Report it through our website to maximize the chance of getting it resolved.
We help you write an effective complaint in minutes. Our AI models are trained on thousands of effective complaint letters. Then we push it through emails, social media, paper complaint letters and other tools at our disposal. And you are not alone: our helpful community is there for advice.
How do I contact Barclays customer service?
Use the number printed on the back of your Barclays card, the in-app chat, or the contact and complaints pages on barclays.co.uk: we do not hold a phone number or an email address for the bank in our data, and a bank number taken from a search advert is one of the most common ways people are put through to a scammer. Barclays will never ask you to move money to a safe account, and no genuine member of staff will ask for your full PIN or your online banking passcode.
Ask for a complaint reference at the start and keep every message in the app or in writing, with dates. This applies to Barclays in the UK: holders of a Barclays credit card issued in the US deal with a separate American business and a different set of rules. Charge on your statement you never made? Send it to us and we push your complaint to the bank by email, social media and printed letters.
How do I dispute a Barclays transaction?
Report it to Barclays as soon as you spot it and say which of two things it is: a payment you never authorised, or a card payment for goods or services that never arrived or were not as described. The first is a fraud report and the bank should look at refunding it; the second is a chargeback, which Barclays raises with the card scheme on your behalf and which has strict time limits counted from the transaction or the promised delivery date.
Have the date, the amount, the merchant name as it appears on the statement and any emails with the seller ready, and ask for the case reference. If you paid by Barclaycard credit card, ask about Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act as well, which can make the card provider jointly liable with the retailer for a qualifying purchase, and which is often stronger than a chargeback.
Will Barclays refund money lost to a scam?
In most cases it should. Report it to Barclays the moment you realise, because reimbursement rules that came into force in the UK in 2024 require payment firms to refund most victims of authorised push payment scams, where you were tricked into sending the money yourself, with a small set of exceptions such as gross negligence on your part.
Give the bank the payment details, the account you sent the money to, and every message and advert that led you to it. If reimbursement is refused, ask for the reason in writing and for the final response, then take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service, which decides these cases independently and overturns bank decisions regularly. Tell us where it stands and we keep advising you on what to send next and when to take it to the ombudsman.
Why has Barclays frozen or closed my account?
Accounts are usually blocked or closed after a security or compliance review, and Barclays is often not allowed by law to tell you the detail, which is why the answers feel so unhelpful. What you can insist on is the practical part: access to your money, a full statement, confirmation of the notice period set out in your account terms, and a written final response to your complaint.
Send any identity or source of funds documents they ask for in one go, keep a copy, and open a basic account elsewhere immediately so that wages and direct debits have somewhere to land. If the final response does not resolve it, you normally have six months from that letter to take the case to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Other Barclays customers whose accounts were closed the same way can tell you what finally released the money, and a complaint through our complaint process puts your case in front of the bank while the ombudsman route runs.
What do people complain about most at Barclays?
So far consumers reported 1 complaint about Barclays here, too few to show a clear pattern yet. Our research shows what typically goes wrong at large UK high street banks: disputed card payments and chargeback claims, money lost to scams and how much of it gets reimbursed, accounts frozen or closed during security and compliance checks, online and app logins that fail at the verification step, and mortgage or loan servicing that is slow to correct a mistake.

What happens after I submit my complaint?
Your complaint gets its own public page on Complain.biz and we get to work: we bring it to the attention of Barclays through emails, social media, paper complaint letters and other tools at our disposal.
And we stay with it after you file. Our trained AI opens a case file for you and keeps coaching: what to reply, when to push again, and how to escalate if nothing happens.
Can other consumers help me with my Barclays complaint?
Yes. We have an active community of consumers, and complaints here are public: people who ran into the same problem with Barclays can give you advice or back you up with their own story. A complaint with a community behind it is much harder to overlook.
