About Bank of Canada

While the Bank of Canada is Canada’s central bank rather than a bank the public holds accounts with, people who contact it tend to arrive with the same handful of questions: requests about personal accounts, mortgages or loans, which belong to commercial banks, searches for unclaimed balances that have been transferred to it, what to do with a torn or damaged banknote, and how policy interest rate decisions feed through to mortgages and savings.

If your issue is with your own money, start with the financial institution that holds the account, then its internal ombudsman, and then the federal body that oversees banks. For a damaged note or an unclaimed balance, follow the process published on the Bank’s own site rather than paying a third party. Keep dates, reference numbers and copies of anything you send, and put requests in writing rather than by phone.

Unclaimed balance claim refused, or a request sent to the wrong office? Raise it with us. We help you set it out with the dates and references, drawing on earlier cases.

Common customer service questions about Bank of Canada

How do I file a complaint about the Bank of Canada?

Do you have a dispute or a bad customer experience with the Bank of Canada? Report it through our website to maximize the chance of getting it resolved.

We help you write an effective complaint in minutes. Our AI models are trained on thousands of effective complaint letters. Then we push it through emails, social media, paper complaint letters and other tools at our disposal. And you are not alone: our helpful community is there for advice.

How do I contact the Bank of Canada?

There is no phone number or email address for the Bank of Canada in our records, so use the contact details published on the Bank's own website, where the routes are separated by subject: unclaimed balances, damaged banknotes, general public enquiries and media. The Bank of Canada is Canada's central bank and does not hold accounts for the public, so anything about your own money starts elsewhere: the bank or credit union that holds the account, then that institution's internal ombudsman, then the external complaints body it belongs to and the federal agency that oversees banks. Put requests in writing, keep dates and reference numbers, and quote any earlier case number. Be careful with third parties that offer to search for money or contact the Bank on your behalf for a percentage: the official processes are ones you can follow yourself.

Sent to the wrong office and passed from desk to desk? Take it through our complaint process and we push it out by email, social media and printed letters.

How do I claim an unclaimed balance held by the Bank of Canada?

Unclaimed balances from Canadian federally regulated banks and trust companies are transferred to the Bank of Canada once an account has been dormant for the period set in law, and you search for them and claim them through the Bank's own service at no cost. Search the name exactly as it would have appeared on the account, then try the variants: maiden names, middle initials, initials only, misspellings and former addresses. If you are acting for an estate, search the names of the deceased and any business they ran. A claim needs proof of identity and, for a deceased holder, proof that you are entitled to act, such as probate documents or a death certificate with the will. Expect the claim to be assessed rather than paid on request, keep a copy of everything you send, and note the claim reference.

Claim refused after you sent everything that was asked for? Report it on our website and we help you write an effective complaint in minutes, setting out the dates and references in wording that has worked in earlier cases.

What do I do with a torn or damaged Canadian banknote?

Start at your own bank or credit union: a note that is torn, worn or taped but still clearly recognizable is usually exchanged over the counter, and that is far faster than sending it anywhere. The Bank of Canada operates the redemption process for notes that are too badly damaged for that: burned, water damaged, mouldy, shredded or incomplete notes are assessed on how much of the original note survives and whether the security features can still be verified. Do not wash, iron, tape or trim a damaged note before sending it, because that can reduce what an assessment can confirm. Follow the process published on the Bank's own site, send whatever remains of the note with the form it asks for, photograph the note first, and use a trackable delivery service. Expect an assessment and a decision rather than an automatic payment of the full face value.

How does a Bank of Canada interest rate decision affect my mortgage?

A Bank of Canada policy rate decision moves the rates lenders charge, but the Bank does not set the rate on your mortgage and cannot change it: your lender does that under the terms of your contract. A variable rate mortgage or a line of credit usually follows the lender's prime rate within days of a decision, while a fixed rate stays where it is until renewal, when the lender quotes a new rate. If your payment changed, ask the lender in writing for the calculation: the rate applied, the date it took effect, and how much of the payment now goes to interest rather than to the balance. Complaints about a mortgage, a renewal offer or a prepayment penalty go to the lender's own complaints team first, then to its external complaints body, then to the federal agency that oversees banks. The Bank of Canada cannot review any of them.

Lender will not show you the calculation? Report it here and we open a case and keep coaching you on what to send next and when to escalate.

What do people complain about most at the Bank of Canada?

Nothing has been reported about the Bank of Canada here yet. Our research shows what typically brings people to a central bank and where the frustration arises: enquiries about personal accounts, mortgages and loans that in fact belong to a commercial bank, unclaimed balance searches and claims that are refused or slow, damaged banknote redemptions that are assessed for less than the holder expected, requests sent to the wrong office and passed around, and questions about how interest rate decisions feed through to mortgages and savings.

Sound familiar? Be the first to report it and open the record for other consumers.

What happens after I submit my complaint?

Your complaint gets its own public page on Complain.biz and we get to work: we bring it to the attention of the Bank of Canada through emails, social media, paper complaint letters and other tools at our disposal.

And we stay with it after you file. Our trained AI opens a case file for you and keeps coaching: what to reply, when to push again, and how to escalate if nothing happens.

Can other consumers help me with my Bank of Canada complaint?

Yes. We have an active community of consumers, and complaints here are public: people who ran into the same problem with the Bank of Canada can give you advice or back you up with their own story. A complaint with a community behind it is much harder to overlook.
