Discovery channel complaint: Disgusting HIV medication commercial

Complaint from Yachtbase reported on 14 October 2022 about Discovery channel

New complaint
Complaint pending
Complaint resolved
Complaint closed

My complaint:

Watching The Discovery Channel this evening and a commercial comes on I’ve never seen for an HIV medication called Apretude. It featured actors as gay men and couples being affectionate hugging flirting and then the last straw was 2 men kissing each other on the lips.. I am not homophobic but I am a heterosexual male who believes this is crap that should not be forced upon us in the private of our homes on our television through a cable service we pay big dollars for!!! It was the most Unacceptable and disgusting commercial I’ve ever seen on television!

Suggested solution:

The commercial needs to be removed from The Discovery Channel or Any other channel I pay far for that matter or I will cancel my subscription to their channel! I will also spread the word and make sure everyone else knows to cancel this absurd Televised commercial. Liberals love to force this crap upon others. I'm here to tell them we'll cancel their shit too!

I agree 100% I don’t want to see this garbage on my TV and I don’t want my children seeing it…. They don’t have to advertise this on TV the gay community has enough money they are a very wealthy community they have a lot of contacts in the media And with the celebrities in Hollywood they can advertise in their own newspapers is there a gay media outlet… they don’t understand the majority of people in this country don’t care about them or HIV they chose that lifestyle it was a decision a choice it was the disease that… Read more »

This is so hateful! Homosexuality has NOTHING to do with pedophilia! Gays have a right to live in this country just like any other American! You need to keep your Q-cult biased homophobic hatred to yourself and seek anger management counseling. This country has always had gays. If you can’t handle that, you can always choose to go elsewhere.

Not interested in any Biblical nonsense from an ancient and ridiculous fairytale ! Grow a brain and learn a thing or two about the realities and complexities of human sexuality before sounding so mindless. Stop “Cherry Picking” passages from a book written 1,900 years ago by nomads in the desert and drop the religious ignorance and paranoia on the subject.

I am a Christian but I would not use that to judge anyone. There is no one that is without sin in this world and since men walked the earth, men living men has always been. I don’t believe anyone should be made to feel bad by scripture because there is a scripture for everyone, adultery, gluttony, lust, stealing on and on. So whoever uses the Bible against you should point it right back on themselves. All I am saying is I’d rather not watch. I think that is a fair statement.

It is sexual perversion. Not name calling just using the definition of what it is. You need to seek help for your perverted mental sickness. You are right gay and pedophilia are different. But what they both have in common is sexual perversion.

We as a society are susceptible to all kinds of unwanted propaganda on all streaming devices now days, however keep it in the closet where it belongs. My children don’t need to be influenced to these types of commercials and I will join the fight to ban them. You live your life but don’t push your beliefs on others. Respectfully, you missed the ENTIRE point of these complaints, I think. How a person chooses to live his/her life is between him/ her and God. That said, I agree that I DON’T want to see these portrayals in ads either… it’s just off putting and, FIRSTLY, violates God’s Word. Don’t take MY word for it…look it up for yourself.

Renae

It also states in God’s word that Jesus is the only one that can judge. It also shows how Jesus NEVER judged people….and proving that by hanging out with the prostitutes, thieves, adulterers, etc. AND it says to LOVE E-V-E-R-Y-B-O-D-Y!! I’m a strong believer that if a person claims to live by what the Bible says that they can’t pick and choose what to believe in and what not to. You should believe in what the WHOLE Bible says….not just portions that fit your life and desires!!!

Yes, they have the right to live in this country, but leave your inappropriate commercials to the gay/lgbtq channels!! You obviously don’t care that young children are corrupted by these commercials, and will never get their innocence back. Everyone has to “protect” the lgbtq community, and no one cares about the children!

You are literally the posterchild for homophobia. “They have enough rights now.”? Who’s the elitist now?? You’re entitled to your own religious beliefs, but that gives you no right to impose your rights onto another person. To be honest, those commercials irritated me too, but because it seemed like it was trying to be proactive, rather than promoting the drug in the commercial. One last thing…being gay, has absolutely nothing to do with pedophilia!!!! Pedophilia is a psychiatric disorder in which an adult or older adolescent experiences a primary or exclusive sexual attraction to prepubescent children. Know what you’re talking… Read more »

Idk how I got here, but you’re right. They don’t show straight ppl making out for herpes or syphilis commercials. Also, they don’t show IV drug users shooting up for Hepatitis or HIV commercials. It’s crappy when most ppl, no matter sexuality, lead normal lives. This is the only country where prescription drugs are advertised like automobiles or something? You would think the doctor would suggest medication, not that you walk in and ask for something you saw in a commercial. Anyways, thanks for opening my eyes on that.

You definitely have some mental health issues and are so overtly homophobic for a reason…you must be a very insecure and closeted homosexual yourself and cannot deal with it. Otherwise, what two consenting adults do with one another is their business and seeing some PDA in a commercial with gays should not threaten and horrify you so ! If anyone has trouble putting two and two together, this is actually a homophobic commercial. It’s basically showing that only gay people need treatment for HIV, as it used to be known as a gay man’s disease. Shouldn’t be showing this commercial anymore for so many reason, but for people screaming about an “agenda”.. how about we just remove kissing and sex from movies entirely? those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

I am not homophobic but that commercial caught me off guard. I was shocked at how graphic it was and it made me uncomfortable to think about. This should be shown late at night when young children are in bed.

Joining in the conversation as a gay man. The reason why I was doing research about this commercial is that as a gay person, I thought this commercial was offensive and disgusting for the reason that it depicts gay people as a bunch of promiscuous, feminine, drag queens. I can tell you that this is far from the truth, most of us like most people have value relationships, family, and manhood. I think that this commercial is a huge problem and should be taken off. And then I came here and I read Daniel and Bill’s comments and realized that… Read more »

It’s not hating the person, it’s hating the act and the fact it’s pushed down our throats and exposed to our children. God is not our “excuse.” According to the bible homosexuality is a sin. God made a man and a woman to reproduce the earth. As a matter of fact God speaks against it in the bible. It’s your choice to be who you want to be and it’s my choice to not agree with it, so how is that hating? We all have the right to our opinions and beliefs…again, that’s not hating. You people get so offended… Read more »

This commercial is ridiculous because they are discriminating and being biased towards themselves, the gays. If they want to sell aids medicine fine but when most scenes in the advertisement show gay people it implies that mostly gay people have aids. Even if that is true it still is biased because drug users also get aids, and str8t people. Im a male hetero but I think its ridiculous that not even the people selling gay medicine can do it without discriminating or being biased to their own kind.

So sick of the commercials big pharma pushes out to sell their drugs. I don’t want to see a man kissing another man’s neck nor do I want to see a heterosexual couple doing it either. Get the sex out of commercials.

Everyone who is offended by this commercial should send their complaint to:

If they get enough complaints they will take it down.

This commercial also shows two random guys flirting and trying to connect in a public area. Glorifying random pickup partners is irresponsible.

Exactly why I searched and found this site… Brokeback Mountain was a great film that I enjoyed, and I’d understand an AD placement for this high risk group before/during/after that movie, but even at that I DO NOT FEEL THAT FORCING ALL OF US TO WATCH HOMOSEXUALS TONGUE KISSING serves any purpose other than to giddily goad those that do not share that perverse lifestyle. It is done purposely to incite anger from those that find these unnatural and disease causing acts disgusting.

My issue with is not the gay people. My issue is pushing it with the kiss. I would feel the same if it was a heterosexual couple kissing in the commercial. Name ONE commercial where a man and woman are even kissing. If I am respectful enough not to make out with my boyfriend in front of my kids, why should they be exposed to that on television?? I feel like gay people are always trying to push the envelope. That’s my issue. Trying too hard to get someone to accept something usually ends up with someone being nauseating. Seriously.… Read more »

I totally agree!!! I don’t want this lifestyle shoved in my face or my childrens!! I’m a Christian and I know if I pushed my way of life on a commercial, it would be banned immediately! Why has this ungodly way of life crammed into the media so strongly???? I can tell you, but you wouldn’t like my answer. A question for you: why do they need this drug? Think about it.

I have a question for anyone in the gay community if it’s not about indoctrinating our children please tell me why do you have to run these commercials on TV stations like TBS when Christmas shoes on I just saw it going the movie Christmas vacation why why that time frame why doing a Christmas movie I know why not just a decoration of the children do you want to slap the Catholic community in the face and also why do you put books in our children’s elementary schools like Sally has two mommies or Bobby has two daddies why… Read more »

This commercial rubs me the wrong way. (The Dovato commercial is much more appropriate for diverse audiences, by comparison.) Regardless of sexual preferences (gay, straight, etc.), I think it’s hard to warm up to a commercial for a product that is necessary because individuals choose not to exercise enough self control to avoid having promiscuous, casual sex, which creates the risk of disease transmission. That’s what comes to my mind whenever I find myself having to view this suggestive commercial. It is as important to mental health as to physical health, to engage in intimate behavior only with partners we… Read more »

What a homophobic jerk! The first thing the comment poster says is: “I am not homophobic, but it is disgusting” Two guys kissing gets him all bent out of shape. However,it it were a man and a woman….no issue! Listen buddy, same-sex marriage has been legal since 2015 and same-sex couples kiss…so get a life,it’s 2022,not 1982 anymore!

Are these hate-mongers for real? Most of these ignorant and homophobic idiots are so repulsed by this commercial….where are they living and it what decade? Homosexuality is a normal and natural part of human sexuality…a simple fact of life. It has existed since the dawn of time and will continue to as long as humanity does. And don’t inject your Biblical garbage, religiously-fueled insanity or false morality over some fake God in the clouds not approving of it either. Marriage-Equality became legal in 2015 in all 50 states. Gay people exist and can now marry legally…it is no longer taboo,… Read more »

Most of these negative and hateful comments seem to be from from right-wing Trump loving Republicans and hate-fueled conservatives or religious-nuts…living in the past. Marriage-Equality became the law of the land in 2015 in every state. Newsflash…homosexuals also hug, kiss, hold hands and can get married. What do these fools want gay people to do…still hide in the basement and live in perpetual fear, shame and guilt? It is 2022, not 1982…wake-up and accept what is real and natural for them, too !

Get over it people! What decade are you living in? If seeing gay people kissing gets you all bent out of shape and this hostile…you have some serious issues about homophobia. Gays have been allowed to marry legally since 2015 and yes, they hug, hold hands, kiss and so on. What is the big deal? And stop worrying about the kids seeing it on tv. This is real life….focus on getting all these illegal guns off the streets you right-wingers, Trump lovers and delusional conservatives out there!

The commercial is inappropriate for the general family audience. Male-male copulation is abnormal. There is no procreation and no purpose other than sharing of disgusting diseases. The a-hole is an exit not an entrance.

I can not believe the venom in these people’s comments. First off. this commercial was not pornographic, Perhaps, a little risqué, but only a representation of real life in 2022. Since SCOTUS had a brain in 2015,before it was hijacked by radical partisan and religiously fueled justices with an agenda…they signed into law “Marriage-Equality” in all 50 states. Do you haters and paranoid people really expect homosexuals to remain hidden in the closet and not exhibit public displays of affection like heterosexuals do in our faces 24-7? think about that, simply because it is not your sexual orientation as a… Read more »

Stop it with the kids already! Don’t you think they already know what gay people are by age 10? And if they are younger, this is real life and will learn these facts soon enough. You making it seem somehow taboo, dirty or not mentionable only adds to the misinformation homophobia about homosexuals and their role in society as consenting adults. Exactly what are you all so afraid of, really?

This is a disgusting commercial. I have to cut my tv off when this commercial comes on. My children are at a very impressionable age. As this is not a commercial that depicts a traditional relationship in the eyes of God we do not promote such ideas in our home. Knowing that these relationships exist, I tend to not encourage them.
Is there not a less offensive way to advertise this medication for all?
